Diamonds - Special Exhibition at Dynamic Earth

NEW SPECIAL EXHIBITION, DIAMONDS, ADDS
SHINE AND BRILLIANCE TO DYNAMIC EARTH’S 7TH SEASON

MINING AND GEOLOGY CENTRE NOW OPEN

A new Science North travelling exhibition is making its North American debut at Dynamic Earth, Home of the Big Nickel!  Diamonds, is now shining bright in the MacLean Engineering Gallery at Dynamic Earth, which is now open for its 7th season!

“The Ontario government is pleased to support Science North travelling exhibits which in turn generate revenues that support the development of new events and attractions,” said Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle, who is also chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

Science North is Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction and I am pleased that our government continues to support these types of interesting and educational exhibits for our residents and visitors to experience,” says Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci.

Diamonds is the first special exhibition to open at Dynamic Earth, and the sixth exhibition to be created by the staff at Science North,” stated Guy Labine, Science North Acting CEO.  “I would like to thank the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for their ongoing support of Science North’s multimedia and travelling exhibit business, which began in 1996.  Since then our team has created several award-winning exhibitions, multimedia shows and large format films, which are sold or leased internationally.”

Diamonds will make its debut in Sudbury.  After its run at Dynamic Earth, the exhibition will be leased to science centres and museums across North America over the next five years.  Revenue generated from the leases for Diamonds will be reinvested into exhibit development and renewal at Dynamic Earth and Science North in order to develop new experiences.

The 200 metre (2,000 square feet) Diamonds special exhibition is organized into five main themes and experience areas, and will also introduce visitors to
Eira Thomas, a respected Canadian geologist.

“Eira Thomas was only 24 years old when she discovered the multibillion-dollar diamond deposit, which is now the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories,” said Mia Boiridy, Director of Dynamic Earth.  “We are very happy to have been able to interview her and profile her career through this exhibition which explores the formation of diamonds, how we find them once they are on surface, mining and processing, the properties, and the gem in all its glory.  This is an exhibition about diamonds that is unlike any that’s ever been done before, and we are very proud of it,” commented Boiridy.

Visit the new Diamonds exhibit and find out what makes Canadian diamonds among the most valued in the world!   Unearth how diamonds are formed and mined out of the ground!  You can learn what types of sand may contain diamonds.  Using some of the same tools and equipment seen in jewellery stores, you can size your own diamonds, evaluate colour and determine cut!  The Diamonds exhibition is included with Dynamic Earth admission and free for Science North members.

The new Diamonds special exhibition is supported and funded in part by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and is supported by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, and Geological Survey of Canada - Natural Resources Canada.

Diamonds is a Science North production.  Visit dynamicearth.ca/diamonds for more information.
